Ilkeston Town 2 King's Lynn 1
7th October 1997
Free-scoring Ilkeston were made to hang on for victory in the Dr Martens League Cup after looking set to be on their way to a runaway success.
the Midland Division side, scorers of 40 goal s so far this season, showed their skills, causing all sorts of problems from the Linnets in this cup tie first leg.
Things looked grim for Lynn after 69 minutes when, already 2-0 down, referee Andrew Turner spotted a push and gave a penalty.
Matt Carmichael stepped up confidently but his hope of adding this 13th goal of the season were dashed as James Hollman dived to his left to save.
That gave Lynn the spur they needed and the final 20 minutes saw then recreate some of their best form.
New signing Ian Cambridge, a half-time substitute, was at the heart of the revival with an assured display linking defence with attack while setting up several chances for Lee Hudson and Brett McNamara.

And he crowned his debut with a goal, sending keeper Malcolm Rigby the wrong way from the spot after Hudson had been fouled by David Hercock.
Cambridge and Hudson set up McNamara for a glorious chance but Rigby pulled off an excellent save ad then Craig Hopkins sent a 20-yard volley just over the bar as the Linnets took control.
Lynn had also impressed in the opening 10 minutes with Hudson finding the side netting in the first 100 seconds, McNamara having a goal ruled out for a foul and being denied by Rigby before Hopkins was tripped on the edge of the box with the goal gaping.
But then things went wrong. John Knapper blasted home a glorious 20-yard volley after 20 minutes and Ilkeston's swift inter-passing game saw them create a hatful of chances before they scored their second through Carmichael. They wasted several chances before the penalty save sparked the Linnets comeback.
