King's Lynn 1 Hednesford Town 0
9th March 2002
HURRICANE Clements again hit town, with Matty Clements notching his third goal in two games.
A superb second half display against a fierce wind, which was the major factor in the game, saw the Linnets to a deserved win.
He, Lee Hudson and Kevin White the first time this season in his more familiar role were all exemplary in a determined and hard-working team effort in the second period.
Clements originally started the game at right wing-back again.
But after a first half spoiled by a ferocious wind blowing straight down the pitch, the game turned on a half-time substitution.
Wayne Anderson came on for Tommy Wright and ran his socks off.
This meant Clements moved up front, and he terrorised the away defence with his pace in the second half.
"Tommy decided to come off to consolidate the midfield," said acting manager Kevin Boon. "Clem's pace proved to be the winning stroke.
"The players must be given credit for their one heck of commitment, and credit to the coaching team.
"Wayne has got so much energy, his tackling and passing were brilliant."
Both sides found it almost impossible to control the ball in the first-half gale, with Lynn's Zeke Rowe having the only shot of note.
Then Hednesford could not take advantage of the following wind, with giant former Derby and Birmingham forward Kevin Francis completely ineffective.
Clements' switch had an almost immediate effect.
White won the ball and Hudson deftly set up Clements to take one touch, round a defender and slot home the winner with relish.
Hednesford's only chance was provided by home keeper Steve Wilson, who escaped from a muddle of his own making.
His poor clearance went to Stewart Airdrie, whose lob Wilson acrobatically turned away with one hand.
In injury time, and with Clements causing more problems, White's shot was saved by keeper Mark Gayle and the ball was hurriedly cleared for a corner.
