King's Lynn 3 Peterborough Utd Reserves 6
9th April 1962
THREE goals in fifteen minutes - five goals in half-an-hour. That is what Lynn should have had at the Walks on Monday evening in the first leg of their Norfolk Invitation Cup tie against Peterborough Reserves. But in fact all they had to show for their early supremacy and the creation of good chances was a solitary goal by Haltand that a surprise one.
Lynn could have been on the right side of a big score had their finishing been no better than average. But it was atrocious and the result was that they were on the wrong end of a hiding.
Peterborough must have been very thankful when, by half-time they were level 1-1.
They certainly were able to I see at first hand why Lynn are languishing among the Irelegation candidates in the Premier Division of the Southern League.
Peterborough were slow starters and their square- playing defence became particularly vulnerable as Lynn slipped through, beating the offside trap. But all expeCtations of goals were dampened as first one player and then another missed "sitters".
Early on Dixon was given a fine chance by Wright but his close range shot went straight at goalkeeper Ronson who managed to deflect the ball against the bar. Then Stevens missed a chance and Lumley had a shot scooped off the line:
There was temporary compensation for these disappointments when HALL from 30 yards out fired past a line of defenders to score off the foot of a post. The shot so surprised Ronson that he made no move to save.
But if this was thought to be the break-through by Lynn, home supporters were sadly disillusioned for soon afterwards Dixon only half hit the ball when he had an easy chance, and after Bacon had broken clear he teed up the ball for Wright, who completely mis-kIcked with the goal at his mercy.
Obviously encouraged by these escapes, Peterborough suddenly began to play some delightful attacking football and TURLEY equalised after 30 minutes. The tables were turned and Lynn became hard-pressed by a slick-moving Peterborough attack. The home defends held out, however and it was Lynn who should have scored next. Getting the ball to the right of goal Bacon was expected to crash in a shot but he stubbed the ground and the ball merely trickled towards Ronson.
Early in the second half TURLEY put Peterborough I ahead, but within the space of a few minutes Lynn equalised and went ahead for the second time, WRIGHT and DIXON taking chances as they should be taken.
Straight from the restart Peterborough equalised through MORTON and once more Lynn were up against it. Bone made one of the most spectacular saves of the season when he raced back into the goalmouth and dived to head away a Hails shot.
But it only delayed for a few moments Peterborough regaining the lead. In the 65th minute MORTON ran on to a long pass from Stafford to scoop the ball over a retreating Lynn defence and the advancing Manning. Eleven minutes later SENIOR cracked in a great shot to make the score 5-3.
Then came another blow for Lynn as skipper Mackey was carried to the dressing room with an ankle injury. Peterborough kept up their attacks and Manning made a most remarkable save In stopping the ball between his legs as it swerved away from the direction in which he dived.
By this time Lynn were a ragged team and Peterborough added the final blow three minutes from the end when TURLEY scored his third and his side's sixth, to give the Posh a convincing lead with which to to start the second leg at Peterborough next Wednesday.
