Long Sutton Athletic 0 King's Lynn 5
10th July 2010
KING'S Lynn Town joint manager Gary Setchell was pleased with his side's victory in the very first match for the reformed club.
Returning hero Jack Defty scored four of the goals in the 5-0 win over Long Sutton Athletic, and Setchell was full of praise for the striker.
Setchell said: "I was pleased with Jack Defty getting through 90 minutes after he has just came back from holiday, and he was rewarded with four goals.
"Everyone who knows Lynn will know if we get balls into areas for Jack, he is going to score."
Defty's first goal came after just four minutes, with a towering header from Jamie Thurlbourne's cross.
He scored his second after 22 minutes, and then hit the bar.
Steve Spriggs made it 3-0 before the break with a sweet effort with his left foot.
A second half penalty allowed Defty to finally complete his hat-trick before he grabbed a fourth in stoppage time.
Setchell refused to get carried away with the result, preferring to focus on the bigger picture ahead of the new league season, which kicks-off on Saturday, August 7.
"We know Long Sutton are a league or two below us but that was a good workout to get players fit," remarked Setchell.
"We are still trying to gel because 18 or 19 new players are still trying to form partnerships all over the pitch.
"I was really pleased with how we kept the ball but, more importantly, how hard we worked when we didn't have it.
"It was a difficult pitch to play football on but at times we showed an understanding of a team which had been together for some time."
Setchell admitted there is still a lot of work to do in the coming weeks, starting with tonight's game against a Norwich City XI.
"We need to work on our shape.
"It was quite good on Saturday because we had a lot of the ball, but Norwich will have an equal amount of possession and we will see how we do under pressure.
"We have our squad now but we won't rule out new players at any time of the season.
"We are happy with our squad, but maybe we can add one more before the start of the season."
