Boston Town 0 King's Lynn 1
10th August 2010
THE Linnets left it late before sealing their first United Counties League win of the season on Tuesday night.
And it was Lynn born-and-bred Jack Defty who was the hero against the ten men of Boston Town during a feisty encounter at Tattershall Road.
Defty was mobbed by his delighted team-mates (see back page) after toe-poking home the winning goal four minutes from time.
Joint Linnets boss Gary Setchell said: "We played a lot more football in the first half than we did in the second, whereas we tended to panic a little bit after the break.
"On Saturday we didn't deserve anything, but tonight we did as all of the players put in a shift out on the pitch.
"Getting the win will take a lot of pressure off the players with two home games coming up in the space of a few days.
"We always believed we would score but obviously the players, the fans and ourselves were on edge the longer the game went without a goal."
Defty also had a goal ruled out for a foul on his marker, as well as having a header parried onto the bar by Boston Town goalkeeper James Doughty as Lynn put Saturday's horror showing at Long Buckby firmly behind them.
Boston were reduced to ten men on the stroke of half-time when striker Gary Bull was given a straight red for an elbow on Jamie Alsop, who was replaced by new signing Patrick Bexfield at the start of the second half.
Lynn dominated the second period as the Boston goal lived a charmed life.
Danny White, Scott Cubberley and Keiran Doherty all went close to breaking the deadlock, but they had to wait until the dying minutes when Defty, who was a constant menace to the home defence all night, prodded home from close range - much to the delight of his ecstatic colleagues. Boston Town: Doughty, Thompson, Baker, Stainfield, Foster, Pinner, Lambley, Brooks, Bull, Nimmo, Jackson.
