Chatham Town 1 King's Lynn 3
11th January 2003
The Linnets did their first double of the season.
They used a depleted Dr Martens Eastern Division programme to make ground on some of the leading teams.
The Walks outfit, who hold seventh place, are now level on 42 points with next Saturday's visitors Dorchester, and are nine points behind second-place Banbury, who have a game in hand.
Key defenders Dean Greygoose and Mark Burrows were suspended, but Simon Nobes deputised well in goal and was not called into action until the half-hour mark, saving a long-range effort from Garry Tilley.
Lee Cowling came in for Burrows.
Chris Bacon was twice denied by keeper Kevin Fewell early on, but Lynn took the lead after seven minutes.
Veteran Paul Raynor fed David Staff, who ran and shot past Fewell for his eighth goal of the campaign. Staff could soon be the fourth Linnet to reach double figures.
Bacon, Holmes and Staff went close before Lee Stephenson notched his 18th goal of the season on 36 minutes, heading home a cross from skipper Glen Fuff.
Stephenson was denied a second in the dying minutes of the opening half, Fewell pulling off a stunning close-range save.
Raynor hit the bar with a lob three minutes after the break, but then Stephenson was injured and was replaced by Adam Weston.
Bacon had a couple of efforts, then Jack Defty headed over a Staff cross.
Tilley and Lombardo headed wide for the hosts, who replied on 87 minutes following a number of corners.
Player-manager Peter Coupland nodded home from a Tilley cross.
But Bacon made the game safe in injury time when he latched onto fellow youngster Nobes' long free-kick and fired home.
Linnets director of football Kevin Boon thanked Lynn's travelling fans for their support.
"The supporters could have had a wasted journey because the game was in doubt, but it still didn't put them off travelling," said Boon.
"They were very vocal and really got behind the players".
