King's Lynn 1 Weymouth 0
11th March 2000
Dave Puttnam marked his comeback from injury with
his ninth goal of the season as King’s Lynn recorded
their fifth win in six games.
Puttnam rifled home a free kick on the edge of the
six-yard box after Weymouth reserve keeper Danny
Claxton had caught a Mark Robinson back pass.
The victory was no more than the sprightly Linnets
deserved and pleased manager Gary Mills.
“I was delighted with another three points. We played well and deserved the win,” reflected Mills.
Chances were at a premium in the opening stages
with Glen Fuff just failing to connect with a Puttnam
cross.
But Lynn were rewarded for their lively start when
Robinson touched Lyndon Rowland’s cross back to
his keeper who caught the pass. Puttnam then
stepped up to fire home from Tony Spearing’s touch
past a posse of players from both sides on a crowded goalline.
Weymouth rarely threatened the home goal, but
Chuck Martini had to be at his athletic best five
minutes before the break when he dived full length to tip away Steve Tate’s header which seemed destined for the bottom corner.
Lee Gibson and Puttnam both saw shots from
distance go close before the latter clipped the bar with a cross-cum-shot.
Martini again rescued his side by palming away an effort from David Laws and then produced another good stop in the dying throes to stop a full-blooded volley from Robinson.
Lynn: Martini, Richardson, Spearing, Clark, Fuff, Nwadike, Turner, Gibson (Anderson 75), Rowland, Bogan (Palmer 74), Puttnam. Sub (not used) Bush.
Weymouth: Claxton, Gammon, Browne, Nicholson (Vittles 89), Waldock, Bradford, Robinson, Hutchinson, Tate, Laws (Patterson 72), Tilley. Sub (not used) Bews.
