King's Lynn 2 Daventry 3
11th September 2012
KING'S Lynn Town manager Gary Setchell cut a frustrated figure after seeing his side throw away the chance of testing themselves against Conference North leaders Brackley Town.
Setchell rued missed chances and Lynn's clinical efficiency as The Walks outfit exited this year's FA Cup competition.
The Linnets had enough chances to win Tuesday night's replay against Daventry by half-time, but crashed out after a bizarre 120 minutes which had almost everything.
A deflated Setchell said: "We do the stats after every game. We had 28 attempts on goal, put 28 crosses in from wide areas and had 13 corners and we failed to score a goal ourselves.
"You cannot, at this level, miss gilt-edged chances and concede a sloppy goal like we have.
"The most important areas of the pitch are both boxes. We got done in ours and weren't clinical enough in theirs. Everything else in between is fine at the moment.
"We can't keep squandering chances. The lads work hard to create them and 28 attempts on goal is probably enough to win three games at any level of football.
We're hitting goalkeepers, we're hitting woodwork, we're backpassing it to the keeper and it's not good enough at this level.
I know it, everyone in the ground knew it and it's really disappointing. We work on our finishing and they're flying in during training but then you put them on the pitch and they can't hit a barn door.
Both of Lynn's goals came courtesy of Daventry Town defender Guy Sanders, whose two bloopers cancelled out Mykel Beckley's 53rd-minute opener for the Northamptonshire side.
Just as it looked like the Linnets were heading into the second qualifying round, Jason Lee conceded a penalty in the sixth minute of injury time and Jamie Gould smashed home the spot-kick to send the game into an extra 30 minutes.
And there was still time for one more cruel twist as the Linnets were punished for their wastefulness in front of goal, when Phil Gulliver turned a cross into his own net to send Daventry Town into the next round.
