Corby Town 2 King's Lynn 3
11th September 1973
There was an amazing spell of three goals in two minutes in Tuesday's Southern League game at Corby.
It was started in the 44th minute when Lynn were award a penalty after Rudd had been pushed by Blick as they went for a corner. Player-manager Frank Wignall stepped up to hammer in a equaliser to Corby's early scrambled goal by Fawcett.
Straight from the kick-off Walpole darted round the defence to shoot past Steel's right hand to put the Steelmen in front again.
But back came the Linnets and from another corner Brooks pushed the ball forward to Rudd who hooked over Walters head.
Mid-way through the second half Lynn's winner came from another corner on the right. Woolmer and Elliot worked together to get the centre over where the commanding figure of Wignall went in unchallenged to head home.
After this goal Lynn really did not look in too much difficulty. In fact Wignall could have scored again but shot wide, then in the last minute Rudd fastened on to a back pass and Walters stopped his effort.
Lynn took a gamble in the second half with Wright limping after a bad tackle. He was kept in defence and once Gough outpaced him to fire in a shot which Steel tipped over the top, but in the end the decision to keep Wright on proved correct.
It was a test of their character to come back twice after Corby had scored and then get the winner.
