Tamworth 3 King's Lynn 0
13th April 1998
LYNN'S miserable run of form continued after they were slaughtered by Tamworth at The Lamb.
This result condemned Peter Morris' side to their third consecutive defeat, leaving them with only one win in six matches and without a goal in 270 minutes of football.
The Linnets went into the game showing four changes from the side unexpectedly beaten by Sittingbourne two days earlier.
Steve Lewis took his place in goal, replacing James Hollman, while Colin Hoyle returned from his one match suspension to step in for the injured Kevin Ellis.
Glyn Roberts was handed a midfield role in plate of Lee Norfolk who was sidelined with a leg injury but the biggest surprise of the day came in the shape of Mark Paul, who had to be content with a place on the bench, making way for Lee Hudson.
Lynn made the early running and Brett McNamara came within inches of giving them a deserved lead in the 13th minute.
Veteran defender Tony Spearing then came to Lynn's rescue to prevent Gary Piggott from striking on goal in the 22nd minute.
But within a minute, Tamworth took the lead against the run of play when John Howard fired home David Foy's corner after Lynn had failed to clear their lines.
A well-worked free-kick from Riches then found Steve Williams in the Tamworth box after 28 minutes but the striker's cushioned header was blasted over the bar by the sprightly Hudson, who was left waiting for his 50th Lynn goal.
The names of McNamara and Howard found their way into the referee's book five minutes before the break following an exchange of words in the Tamworth penalty area as the half came to an explosive end.
Tamworth doubled their lead three minutes into the second half, Willie Batchelor heading home Foy's corner.
Lynn manager Morris introduced Paul with several league scouts again watching the youngster.
Riches volleyed over from long distance for Lynn and Mead tried his luck before Piggott scored two minutes from time after Lewis had saved brilliantly from Darren Shaw.
