King's Lynn 2 Northampton Spencer 1
14th January 2012
LINNETS manager Gary Setchell declared himself satisfied after seeing his side book a home quarter-final meeting with Newport Pagnell.
First-half goals from Jack Defty and Ben Coe set a workmanlike Lynn on their way in a game where both sides also had efforts ruled out for offside.
A happy Setchell said: "We showed good energy and passed the ball well and, but for a goalkeeping error, I think we totally bossed the game."
"No disrespect to Northampton but I think we had another gear or two to go into had we needed it."
"The most vital thing was that we got minutes into Ben (Coe), Liam (Harrold) and Jack (Defty) and the lads up front held the ball up much better this week.
"We played Jamie (Thurlbourne) at left-back and his delivery into the front men was very good.
"Most importantly, we got the result. We got some rest into key players and some fitness into players who haven't played so much this season."
The Linnets took the lead when Defty slotted home a Stephen Spriggs centre after 20 minutes.
Lynn doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time when Coe bundled home another Spriggs cross at the far post.
Northampton Spencer were handed a lifeline midway through the second period when a soft free-kick from Joe Power was fumbled into his own net by substitute goalkeeper Luke Owen.
Despite Owen's howler, Lynn were comfortable winners in the end and the news that Long Buckby's home league game had been frozen off just added to the joy.
Setchell said: We lost our way a little bit in the second half because we took Jack (Defty) off so the ball didn't stick as well upfront and we took Spriggsy off so we lost an outlet.
But we wanted to get them off to keep them fresh for the games on Tuesday and Saturday. Jack Defty getting 65 minutes was a bonus.
