Grantham Town 0 King's Lynn 3
14th April 1979
LYNN'S Win at Grantham on Saturday added further to the conviction that they play better away from The Walks.
The facts speak for themselves . This was the eighth win in 15 away Southern League matches which have in all. secured 18 points At the Walks 15 matches have brought 16 points and just five victories to cheer
Its plain that the away form is up to championship standard while in front of their own fans the
results are less than average.
Those supporters who made the trip to Grantham were quick to rate the performance as among Lynn's best of the season
Grantham started the match with league title honours still within reach, but did not show as much endeavour as had 0swestry 24 hours earlier They pinned Lynn down in the opening 15 minutes without really asking too many questions and after that there was really only one team in it.
The 25th minute goal that started it all was a gem. Roy McManus drove forward down the middle, passed out to David Goose on the left who weighted a perfect centre to the far post where Keith Rudd headed powerfully in.
Grantham crumbled under skilful Lynn attacks after that, with Duncan Wiles and Mick Wright firing in shots. McManus spun round in the penalty area to make space for a left foot shot which spun off the bar.
There was no stopping Wright. however. after 75 minutes when he coolly went through an unguarded middle and without any fuss chipped his shot over the keeper
Grantham were stung into retaliation by the criticism of the officials and fans. There were some frenzied scrambles around the Lynn goalmouth where there was always the danger of a boot diverting the ball towards the net. but these came to nothing. Cooke. the league's top scorer, barely got a look in.
The home side had lust made a tactical substitution. a forward for a defender, when McManus effectively clinched it for Lynn. A 73rd minute free kick was touched on to him and his low shot curled to the right hand side of the net while the keeper was falling to the left
An excellent result by Lynn with bouquets to all the players.
