King's Lynn 1 Cambridge City 5
14th September 2013
The magic of the FA Cup left King's Lynn Town utterly bewildered on Saturday after a defensive horror show condemned the Linnets to an early exit.
Lynn were second best all over the field as Cambridge City cruised into a 4-0 interval lead.
And, although the spoils were shared with a goal apiece in the second period, Lynn's misery was compounded by the late sending-off of midfielder Dan Quigley.
After the game, furious manager Gary Setchell pulled no punches after seeing his side slump out with a whimper.
Setchell said: "We defended with absolutely no direction whatsoever.
"You just can't excuse the goals we conceded, especially at home.
"It was a crushing defeat and I can't explain it.
"We looked heavy, we looked leggy, and the confidence drained from us gradually and gradually.
"That's as bad as we've defended since Chris (Bacon) came back here last time with Wisbech in pre-season.
"Bakes is a good player, but if someone was watching in the stands they'd probably sign him for £10, 000 as he was that effective.
"It was absolutely disgusting defending."
After their cup exploits of previous seasons, this display was at the other end of the scale.
Schoolboy defending allowed Chris Bacon, Ieuan Lewis, Jackson Ramm and Adam Marriott to put the Lilywhites 4-0 in front at the interval.
Rob Duffy continued his fine record of coming off the bench to score from the penalty spot before another defensive howler - this time from goalkeeper Danny Gay - saw Cambridge City restore their four-goal lead 13 minutes from time.
