Canvey Island 2 King's Lynn 1
14th October 2000
THE yellow and blues with Kings on their shirts went through unfortunately this was Canvey as Linnets suffered another early FA Cup exit.
Two goals just before half-time meant a third qualifying round defeat for the second year in a row.
15 minutes gone and Canvey hit the post.
Against a fit, fast and skillful side Lynn missed Jamie March, who failed a late fitness test on his knee, and his replacement at left-back Andy Bullimore was responsible for the first goal.
It was not until Dave Puttnam's late strike that the visitors consistently threatened the Canvey goal.
"It's Always disappointing to get knocked out. For the club financially it's a big blow," said Lynn manager Gary Mills.
"For half-an-hour we were comfortable. I felt they were afraid of us, then the goal settled them down. Bully's messed up. He's held his hand up to the mistake.
"But the biggest killer was the goal just before half-time. The ball hit Glen Fuff and deflected into the corner.
"We knew it was going to be tough and the lads have given everything. It gives them a chance for a bit of limelight, but the league is the priority"
The Gulls' Steve Parmenter hit the post while Puttnam beat keeper Ashley Harrison but saw his lob drift wide. It took a howler to break the deadlock after 35 minutes as Bullimore back-headed a clearance into the path of Wayne Vaughan, who played in Parmenter to strike home.
The hosts doubled their advantage in the second minute of stoppage time as Chris Duffy laid on a through ball to Vaughan, whose low shot cruelly went in off Fuff.
Another error 11 minutes from time gave the Linnets a lifeline as Harrison let a long range Puttnam shot slip out of his hands and loop into the net.
Sub Jon Palmer just failed to connect with a cross while Dave Robinson's header brought a diving save from Harrison and, in a frantic finish, even Chuck Martini came up for a corner.
