King's Lynn 1 Clyde 2
15th July 2008
THE Linnets put on an encouraging display but lost a lively game to a late goal, as both sides missed penalties on Tuesday night.
Lynn had the first chance at The Walks on three minutes when John Turner dispossessed Michael Ohnessorge, but his cross was too close to keeper David Hutton.
Midway through the first half the Scottish League Division One side went ahead with a looping header from Stuart Kettlewell from a deep free-kick against the run of play.
Linnets midfielder Ben Sedgemore smacked the post with a 25th-minute spot-kick while Julian Joachim stretched to volley straight at Hutton.
However, early in the second half Lynn defender Greg Crane levelled with a superb turn-and-volley into the top of the net from a loose ball in the away side's box.
Both sides then made a host of substitutions. In a great move started by sub David Bridgwater, fellow sub Danny Bloomfield hit the Clyde post on 72 minutes.
Clyde's superior fitness told in the last ten minutes as David McKay slid an 87th minute winner into the opposite corner after sub keeper Rob Murray had saved his penalty following a foul by Simon Weaver.
The lively McKay hammered Murray's crossbar in stoppage time.
Lynn boss Keith Webb said: "It was very encouraging. The players have lifted the bar a little bit from where they were.
"It was a competitive game, I thought similar to the sort of game we expect this season. No quarter was asked or given.
"It threatened to spill over but both sides went about it in the right way, and were quite disciplined.
"Jack Defty worked hard, Joe Francis started to get back where he was in the first 25 minutes. Ben Sedgemore did well, while Greg Crane had a good game, and his goal was excellent."
On the duo who missed out, he added: "We're still working with Mark Peters' fitness, while Michael Frew had a slight feeling in his quads. I'm not prepared to gamble on anyone's fitness."
