Mangotsfield 2 King's Lynn 1
16th December 2006
Frustrated caretaker manager Shaun Carey was left with just 11 players and one fit sub after four of his squad failed to arrive before the kick-off due to a lorry overturning on the M4.
The majority of the squad had stayed overnight in the West Country leaving the rest, due to work commitments and suchlike, to travel on Saturday morning
Grant Cooper, Fraser Toms and Rodney Hicks never showed following the accident. Goalkeeper Shaun Marshall only arrived at the end of the first half, while Stephen Harvey also doubled up as physio.
Michael Frew, who was injured and not going to play, was one of the three named subs.
Carey fumed: "I can't speak highly enough of the 11 who were there. I can't ask for more."
On the late arrivals, he said: "I've made my thoughts aware. You can call it (the accident) bad luck – but I don't call it that.
"It's been dealt with, there's been fines handed out by the chairman.
"Players like Mark Warren threw themselves into every challenge.
"I played Alex Notman just behind big Jack (Defty) and Matt Nolan wide on the right, and it worked well "It was a tough game, and the pitch was not the best.
"We gave away a sloppy goal from a set-piece.
"We missed a penalty at one each, when the game could have gone our way.
"We switched off for their second goal. It wasn't as if we could make any changes."
John Higgs, who only just made it in time for kick-off deputised for Marshall and Mark Camm went into defence for Cooper.
Nolan it was who got a welcome goal to give Lynn the lead on 35 minutes. He latched on to a mistake by Neil Arndale to score.
Four minutes later the Field levelled when Gary Warren netted following a free-kick which Lynn failed to clear.
On 53 minutes Alex Notman became the fourth Lynn player to fail to score from a spot-kick (the previous three were Warren, Cooper and Frew) after a foul on Nolan by Warren. Notman's penalty was saved by Will Puddy.
The home side got the winner on the hour, Rob Claridge converting a cross by Jon French.
Now It's a case of concentrating on the league and catching up on those fixtures.
