King's Lynn 2 Tamworth 1
17th March 1998
A STAR was born it The Walks on Tuesday as Lynns fans found a new hero. Substitute Mark Paul scored a stunning goal in the fifth minute of injury time to snatch all three points and send the home faithful away in raptures.
The speed and composure of the youngster was remarkable as he latched on to Lee Hudsons through ball. With the keeper out quickly to block his progress, the 19-year-old switched feet, wrong footed Tony Rowe and shimmied his way past the stricken keeper before rolling the ball into the net from a tight angle.
Lynn had drawn five of their previous six games and another shared set of points looked on the cards to virtually end any hopes of Conference football next season.
But Pauls goal keeps the Linnets in the hunt, six points behind second placed Forest Green and a further four behind leaders Merthyr.
Visitors Tamworth were impressive with some swift passing interplay and lightning attacks and Lynn did well to weather several storms of pressure.
The Linnets made a good start with Martin Matthews blasting home a 25 yard pile-driver but Gary Piggott levelled 15 minutes later when he steered the ball past Duncan Roberts and in off the post.
Piggott could have put the visitors ahead four minutes later when he evaded the offside trap and sent a volley crashing against the bar with Roberts beaten.
Roberts smothered another Piggott effort before Lynn fans sighed with relief when Jason Pascoe escaped with only a booking after pulling back the Tamworth danger man on the edge of the area..
Pascoe was a surprise inclusion in the home ranks, only revealing to manager Peter Morris that he was fit to play on the morning of the game. He played in the heart of defence with new signing Kori Davis at wingback where he impressed in the first half but faded after the break before suffering cramp and being substituted.
Super sub Paul entered the fray in place of Steve Williams ten minutes into the second half and made an immediate impact.
A sudden burst of acceleration left Tim Steele floundering in his wake but the defender did enough to knock the young star off balance and he lost his footing as he neared goal.
He then held off the same player but was driven wide by the keeper before chipping the ball just over the angle.
Pascoe twice cleared off the line and Roberts flapped a ball across the face of goal as Lynn battled to stay in contention before Paul struck his late winner.
