WITH four first-choice players unavailable, this was the last result many fans expected against higher- league opposition on Saturday. But King's Lynn Town proved again that they are likely to be a force to be reckoned with when they kick-off their United Counties League campaign on August 7. The Walks outfit took Spalding United apart with ease and could have easily hit a cricket score against last season's UniBond League strugglers.
Joint Town boss Gary Setchell said: "We're absolutely delighted because all the players who came in today put their hands up and said they want to be part of what
we are trying to achieve and build at the club.
"Obviously we made five or six changes with players away on holiday and the need for us to have a look at one or two other things, but when the other lads return they have to get back in the side.
"Yes, we know all about their quality but it gives others an opportunity.
"The way we reacted to the Spalding goals pleased me - because for five minutes or so we panicked a bit and lost our shape.
"We will learn a little from that experience and its all about how we react to those kind of situations."
Although Town conceded for the first time this slimmer, Setchell said: "I actually felt their first goal was a foul on Bully (Dan Buhlemann).
"In general we defended well. I thought Brady (Stone) and Martin (McNeil) did an excellent job on their big lad up front.
"They knew that they weren't always going to win. the first ball, but if they didn't they made sure that they won the second one."
Defender McNeil put Lynn ahead on six minutes after Scott Cubberley's shot had been cleared off the line.
Cubberley opened his goalscoring account with a brace to make it 3-0 before De Oliveira pulled a goal back for the home side.
Spalding got a second shortly after the restart through Bill Oliver. Spalding looked to be back in the match but Lynn were able to score with ease and Luke Thurlbourne,
Ross Kelly and the returning Robbie Harris added further goals. Thurlbourne's 30-yard thunderbolt was the highlight of another excellent display by the Linnets, who gave a handful of youngsters their chance throughout in the second period.
"I think Luke is playing very well, but fans have yet to see the best of him yet," enthused Setchell.
