Grantham Town 1 King's Lynn 3
17th August 1999
LINNETS stretched their unbeaten league run to 10 games with a comfortable win, their first of the season, at a windswept South Kesteven Stadium on Tuesday.
The watching Ilkeston manager and ex-Linnet Keith Alexander, whose side face Lynn on Tuesday, left at half-time. He had seen enough of a display that saw Lynn go in 2-0 up. Despite having eight corners in the second half Grantham did not use their wind advantage effectively.
Lynn boss Gary Mills enthused over another victory against his old club: "Once we got the first goal we dominated. It wasn't easy for the first 20 minutes, as they like to get the ball forward as quickly as possible.
"But the first goal settled us and all three were superb, topped off by Dave Puttnam's beauty. I was disappointed to concede one late on.
Two Grantham old boys provided an early goal.
Dave Taylor knocked a Chuck Martini clearance down to Lee Wilson, who raced past hesitant defenders to fire in at the far post.
Mark Turner went close and a penalty was turned down before Lynn were rewarded for their sustained pressure. Puttnarn crossed and Turner collected the ball with his back to goal, turned and his shot crept in the bottom corner to stun the statuesque keeper, close season Lynn triallist Ben Nower.
After the break a 25 yard Puttnam special was tipped over by Nower, who then brilliantly denied Tony Marsden and Taylor.
Midway through the half Lynn made it safe in style. Dave Robinson fed Turner, who beat the offside trap down the right and centred for Puttnam to volley sweetly home.
With a minute remaining Gingerbreads finally delivered a decent cross, which was neatly headed in by substitute Darren Bogan.
Lynn: Martini, Dakin, Spearing, Robinson, Clark, Marsden, Turner, Goss, Taylor (McGinty 75), Wilson, Puttnam (Keeble 75). Sub (not used) Mills.
Grantham: Nower, Rogers, Neil, Nwadike, Speed, Carvell, Beckett (Tranter 62), Gilbert (Fox 81), Featherstone (Bogan 81), Wilkes, Bullimore.
