Rushden Town 2 King's Lynn 0
18th April 1992
LYNN were dragged further into the relegation mire with their defeat on Saturday.
With Alvechurch winning at Hinckley. the improbable spectre of relegation looked slightly more likely for the Linnets during the trip back from the Midlands.
The situation was that Alvechurch had to win their last two games and Lynn lose their last four, including yesterday, if the Linnets were to go down. But with Alvechurch celebrating three wins on the trot and Lynn seven without a victory, manager John Musgrove must have viewed this as a possibility.
Musgrove thought Lynn were unlucky on Saturday in what he claimed was the teams best performance since he took over six matches ago. But a fifth minute 35-yard volley by Paul York and a drive by Andy Kirkup after a defensive mix-up in the 25th minute sealed Lynns fate in the first half.
They were unlucky when Paul Carmen headed Fred Easthalls first halt free kick against the post and Derek Wood was also denied by the keeper and at a second half effort go narrowly wide.
Robert Musgrave also went close on the hour, volleying just over the bar, and minutes later the visitors had a penalty appeal turned down when defender Peter Clarke appeared to handle in the box. But on-form Rushden were the stronger side and Kirkup should have increased the score late on, but shot wide with only keeper Steve Lewis to heat.
Lynn: Lewis, Bryant, Fryatt, Watts, Maxwell, Bunting, Easthall (Spauls 75 mins), Wood (Daynes 75 mins), Musgrave, Carmen, Webster.
