King's Lynn 2 Newport County 3
21st October
MANAGER Gary Mills blasted his leaky defence which gave a mediocre Newport side three goals. .
Lynn's back-line, who can usually be relied upon for clean sheets, have not managed it in the league this season. Simon Dakin apart, the defending at times was `Keystone Cops' stuff.
In front of the biggest home crowd of the season following the success of the Kids for a Quid scheme, in conjunction with the Lynn News, McDonalds and the Linnets, Newport - third from bottom packed five across the back, while Lynn's suspended centre half Dave Robinson was sorely missed.
After some heavy rain, if not for the mopping-up efforts of groundsman Dave Kendle and Richard Simper, the game would not have started at all, and perhaps Lynn wished it never had.
"I was very annoyed with the goals given away" fumed Mills.
"I was disappointed to throw points away, we can't make those sort of mistakes.
_ "It's another game without a clean sheet. We've given them three goals at home, which is not good."
Lee Wilson grabbed his first goal in his first league game back from a broken leg.
"Lee came back and did well, it was a big bonus. As soon as he got us the penalty he wanted to take it," added Mills.
Newport took a shock lead when, with the ball going out of play, Glen Fuff caught Jason Donovan and Gary Thorne only just converted the penalty past Chuck Martini.
Dave Puttnam should have done better when well-placed, while Glen Fuff produced a fingertip save from away keeper Pat Mountain.
Lynn had much of the possession and territory but could not make it count until the final minute of the first half.
Brilliant wing-play from Mills beat a defender all ends up and Tommy Wright drilled his cross into the top corner.
The Exiles' second goal five minutes into the second period summed up Lynn's day.
Tony Spearing - back from a two-month lay-off - hit a freekick straight to Chris Bale. Hesitation between Spearing, Andy Bullimore and Martini over the loose ball led to Bale firing into an empty net.
On the hour, Ryan Souter's back-header from a corner seemed to go through Martini's hands and into the bottom corner.
This gave Lynn more urgency and, after Mountain dropped a centre, Emeka Nwadike took too much time on his shot and it was headed off the line by Danny Hill.
But with 15 minutes left, Wilson was chopped down on the edge of the box by Thorne and the forward stepped up to smash home the spot luck.
However, Newport survived a frantic and bad-tempered final spell to earn their first win in six matches.
