King's Lynn 1 Salford 0
21st November 2009
A NUMBER of Lynn players seemed to have their minds on the dire financial affairs affecting the club as they sneaked through after a second half goal from player-boss Carl Heggs.
Heggs climbed off the bench to score a dramatic winner for Lynn, who had been matched, if not bettered, by a team in the division below them for long periods of the game.
Lynn stuck with the same starting line-up as the team that had scored seven goals against Ossett last Saturday, but they rarely looked like repeating their goalscoring exploits of the previous week.
Salford belied their lowely status and did what most teams do when playing higher league opposition.
They challenged, harried, and didn't allow Lynn time on the ball, while creating probably the better chances of the two sides over the 90 minutes.
Striker Kwesi Appiah's bicycle-kick narrowly clearing Andrew Robertson's bar, while at the other end, Mike Flynn's half-volley had Danny Gay back-pedalling and full-back Lewis Webb was on hand to clear the ball from his goal line.
Salford's Neil Chappell saw a header drop inches wide of Gay's back stick and early in the second half Craig Mahon's close-range effort deflected behind.
The busy Gay then smothered at the feet of Astley Mulholland before Chappell hooked wide from ten yards.
Heggs introduced himself as substitute on 70 minutes and immediately made an impact, but the all-important goal did arrive in the 85th minute when he combined with Ben Muirhead before seeing his shot blocked by the visiting keeper. Lynn's boss was, however, the first to react when his determination saw him somehow find the back of the net.
There was still time for a few anxious moments at both ends with Gay making two important saves from Haydn Eames and Ashley Kelly, while Heggs was denied a second goal at the other end during a frantic final few minutes.
