Corby Town 0 King's Lynn 3
22nd March 1979
DUNCAN WILES struck twice in the first half against a slack Corby side on Thursday evening.
He showed no ill-effects from the pulled hamstring which has caused him problems recently.
In the first minute Wiles gave a hint of his determination to prove his value to the side by working his way into a shooting position and forcing Lammond to a good save.
It was soon obvious that Lynn had the edge over a Corby side who played with endeavour but little organisation. In midfield especially, Adams and Watts were putting it together and the front three were offering good targets.
When McManus drove in hard and low from the right. Patterson stuck out a foot and was fortunate not to concede an own goal when the ball flew straight off into the keeper's hands.
A lengthy spell of Lynn pressure had Corby struggling and after 32 minutes the first goal came.
Rudd broke forward and had Wiles in support for the pass inside. It seemed Wiles had missed his chance when a defender closed in on him, but the ball bounced off Bourke's legs and ran kindly for Wiles who gratefully thumped in a shot which gave Lammond no chance.
This same combination worked again in the 43rd minute. Rudd battled through several tackles and passed forward to Wiles who went round the last defender and sent a right foot shot firmly past Lammond.
There was still time before the interval for MsManus to drift in a shot which bounced only a foot wide of the post.
Lynn's back four generally looked comfortable against the occasional Corby raids and Phil Ringwood's handling was exemplary.
During one period it seemed Lynn were getting over-confident and McCowatt had a clear chance from only 10 yards out. but he mis-kicked which gave Ringwood the chance to save.
Wiles, going for his hat- trick, tormented Corby's defence with a tricky run and shot which Lammond kept out.
In the 83rd minute Wiles crossed from the left and Rudd laid the ball off to Adams who steered in a low shot for his first Southern League goal since his belated return to the side.
