King's Lynn 2 Dorchester Town 0
22nd November 1997
Two flashes of individual brilliance from substitute Julian Delicata unlocked the Dorchester defence to enable the Linnets to extend their winning league run to five games.
And, with a solid defence that has conceded only one goal in five games - none at all for 275 minutes - Lynn sit nicely in the Dr Martens League promotion chasing group.
With no league now until December 13 trip to Hastings it was important Lynn picked up maximum points and a superb 15 minute spell midway through the second half put them on target.
An increase in crowd volume appeared to give Lynn the initiative after they had struggled to make headway against a strong but uninspiring visiting side.
On the hour Craig Hopkins and Matthew Wright combined well to release Lee Hudson. Lynn’s top striker haired towards the by-line before pulling the ball back into the danger area. Keeper Kevin Maloy and his defender Ryan Cross got in a muddle in their six yard box but no Lynn forward was able to capitalise.
Two minutes later a quick throw by James Hollman found Hudson just outside his own penalty area. He sped off toward the Dorchester goal and left five defenders in his wake before failing to beat Maloy after a 50 yard run.
But it was third time lucky for the Linnets three minutes later. Substitute Delicata, on for injured Ian Cambridge, skipped past three challenges before being fouled halfway between the touchline and the penalty box.
Richard Skelly’s free kick was headed powerfully towards goal by Kevin Ellis but Maloy pulled off a stunning point-blank save. With Ellis already celebrating, the ball fell into the middle of a crowded six yard box before being knocked into the back of the net - the goal eventually being awarded to Steve Williams.
There was no dispute about the second goal six minutes later. Delicata exchanged passes with Skelly before jinking his way to the by-line and pulling back a tremendous cross. Maloy failed to hold the ball and, when it dropped, Hudson was on hand to slam the ball into the unguarded net. Both sides strung together some impressive moves without ever threatening in the first half. The best chance fell to John Cross after 37 minutes when his 20 yard effort looked destined for the net after Hollman let the ball slip through his hands but, with unbelievable coolness, he spun round to catch the ball behind his head.
Martin Matthews had seen a similar distance strike curl wide while Williams went close with a spectacular diving effort to connect with Skelly’s teasing cross.
