Merthyr Tydfil 4 King's Lynn 0
22nd December 1973
This defeat on Saturday pushed the Linnets down the Southern League Division One (North) table to their lowest ever position since being relegated.
It may be a somewhat distorted picture because they have games in hand over the majority of clubs just above them, but it shows that the Linnets are desperately in need of a lift.
They could have had a golden start at Merthyr when Ray Elliot collected a misplaced pass by Wakeham and found Keith Rudd, but Rudd shot wide.
In the fifth minute Merthyr were on target to take a snap lead. The move was started in mid-field by Jerry Ingram, continued by Clive Jarrett and Derek Bryant with debut player Barry Thomas putting in the final touch.
The Linnets were two down after 14 minutes when Jarrett collected the rebound after Steel had blocked his shot and the Merthyr forward lobbed the ball home. The third goal came after 32 minutes when Mick Wright handled and Jarrett scored from the penalty.
Painter and Wright were working hard in the Linnets defence and Steel helped to keep the score down in the second half. But up front and in mid-field the Linnets did not get any change out of Merthyr.
the fourth goal was headed in by Deacey from Jarrett's cross in the 54th minute. It really wasn't Lynn's afternoon when Bryant cleared a shot from Lindsay off the line. Lynn
