King's Lynn 0 Margate 0
23rd November 1999
The LINNETS were shut out on Tuesday by the Gate, who were content to come for a point.
Dave Puttnam's two late efforts which clipped the crossbar were the closest Lynn got to breaking down one of the meanest defences in the league. Otherwise it was a game littered with half-chances, but neither side deserved to lose.
"I'm delighted to get a point but we had the chances to win," said boss Gary Mills, who could not celebrate his 50th game on the pitch with a victory
"Two or three times we had balls going across the six yard box that went begging, Puttnam had one cleared off the line.
"But it's a good point to get. Margate were very organised, you can see why they haven't conceded many goals. They defended and played well."
The closest Lynn got in the first half was a bullet-header which went wide from Dave Robinson, who was outstanding with centre-half partner Glen Fuff.
Margate's Phil Collins directed a free header straight at Chuck Martini, then Paul Sykes was denied by a last ditch tackle from Robinson.
Puttnam conjured a few moments of magic in the second period, but he had the best chance when the pacy Lee Wilson charged down the right. Puttnam pulled back his centre, but Graham Porter blocked his shot on the line.
Midway through the half Mark Munday's perfectly weighted ball over the top found Lee Williams, who fired inches over the target.
With ten minutes left Puttnam's teasing floated cross hit the top of the woodwork before away keeper Lee Turner frantically palmed it away for Bill Edwards to clear.
It could have been a glorious end in stoppage time as Lyndon Rowland shrugged off a challenge, fed Wilson and Puttnam met his centre with a fantastic volley which skimmed the top of the bar.
This means Lynn have drawn five of their eight home games.
