Cambridge City 2 King's Lynn 1
24th July 2004
THE Linnets suffered a double second-half injury blow to midfielders Jack Defty and Lee Stevenson.
Ten minutes into the second period on Saturday Stevenson twisted awkwardly and limped off, then midway through Defty went to kick the ball
and caught ex-Linnet Shane Huke.
Defty had lengthy treatment before being stretchered off. Mistakes from Danny Hammond handed the Lilywhites a 2-0 lead before Tony Battersby replied
with a late penalty.
"We could have been 3-0 up early on. They started at home with a 4-5-1 formation, so they must have been worried.
"Pro teams give you a lot more space than City did."
On the experimental line-up, Boon added: "If it had been a league game, Danny (Bloomfield) would have started.
"I'm not happy with the defending. Danny will learn from it, and we learn more in pre-season from games you lose."
Danny Bloomfield was on the bench to give triallist Dene Cropper (ex-Lincoln City and Boston) an extended workout, but he pulled up with a dead leg after
20 minutes.
The Walks outfit started brightly, a crossfield ball from Mark Camm finding Stevenson, who forced a good block from ex-Lynn keeper Duncan Roberts in the
second minute.
Carl Holmes and Cropper had further chances before Hammond missed a cross for Rob Miller to fire home on the half-hour mark.
Steve Wilson pushed a Dave Sadler shot onto the Lynn bar.
Then just before the break Hammond tried a clever pass across his own box to give Michael Gash a goal.
Reserve player Brendan Foley, Defty and Bloomfield came on at half-time, the latter hooking over against his former club within the first minute of the
restart.
Stoppages like the injuries broke up the flow of play.
However, late on sub Chris Bacon played a one-two with Battersby to race through before being caught by Roberts for a spot-kick, which Battersby
blasted into the net.
