Chorley 2 King's Lynn 0
Saturday 26 March 1983
This match was dominated by Chorley for virtually the whole game, but it took 49 minutes to find the breakthrough.
Lynn had survived a succession of attacks in the first half but they fell victim to a long throw-in by Paul Knight just minutes after the interval.
The ball was tapped forward by Jeff Twentyman for John Bingham to slam and unstoppable 15 yard shot into the net.
The margin could have been greater but for some marvellous saves by goalkeeper Andy Claxton.
In the 25th minutes he produced a remarkable dive to block a vicious shot from Phil McGreal.
The Linnets also had an incredible escape after 35 minutes. Jim Clayton, who constantly caused problems for the Lynn defence, found enough space on the left to pinpoint a curling centre straight to Paul Mather and his header had the beating of Claxton, bounced down to the goal line before being hacked clear by Chris Watts.
Lynn were restricted to only three positive attacks although they should have equalised in the 60th minute. Jim Kabia was left unmarked inside the penalty area and unleashed a low, fierce drive which deceived the Chorley keeper only to be kicked off the line by Dave Lees.
Colin Foster was booked in the first half when he palmed down a cross from Knight and Knight was also booked for a clumsy challenge on Freddy Eashall.
