Cambridge City 1 King's Lynn 2
28th August 1979
Substitute Les Britton scored a tremendous goal to secure both Southern League points for the Linnets at Cambridge on Tuesday.
His winner came in the 87th minute and he could not have chosen a better moment to score his first ever goal for the senior side.
The Linnets trailing in the first half when they could not settle down at all improved in the second half and after Richard Johnston had equalised it was 19 year old Britton who put the finishing touch to the match.
The City defence were thrown into confusion by a long thrown in from Johnston and the ball bobbed around their penalty area. A hasty clearance was made which Britton intercepted and without hesitation he tried a right foot shot from all of 30 yards which beat City keeper Kevin Murray all ends up.
Britton said later, "I had the goal in my sights when I tried the shot but I thought the keeper might get it."
Britton had gone into defence in the 16th minute when Willie Rider pulled a muscle. At the time Lynn were behind to a headed goal from Steve Kearns and were in all sorts of trouble.
The problems were mainly in midfield where ex-Linnet Mick Goodall was influential for City and a lot of pressure was put on the Lynn defence.
One clear chance fell to Duncam Wiles who broke clear and shot wide as Murray cut down the angle and early in the second half from a similar situation Wiles got round the keeper only to have his shot blocked on the line by Lindsay.
Too many passes were going astray which made progress difficult for Lynn but they were now matching City in the middle.
In the 65th minute a centre from McManus was dropped by Murray which gave Johnston the opportunity to thump the ball home for the equaliser.
Then came Britton's dramatic late winner.
