King's Lynn 1 Dorchester Town 1
28th November 1998
WANTED: A proven goalscorer to try to get the Linnets out of relegation trouble.
Tim Sherwood reckons Blackburn should do everything in their power to recruit Alan Shearer to score the goals needed to get Rovers out of the Premiership's relegation dogfight.
And, although it is unlikely Gary Mills is going to snap up an international striker, he urgently requires someone to regularly hit the back of the net if his side are to get out of the bottom four in their own version of the Premier Division.
Along with Rothwell and Saturday's visitors Dorchester, Lynn have scored the fewest goals in the league - just 15 in 16 league games.
And boss Mills knows his side have got to start taking more chances if they are to claw themselves out of trouble.
He said: "Perhaps we should have done more considering the amount of times the ball went into the box. Sometimes the forwards have got to get in front of the keeper and make crosses their balls." [sic!]
Micky Nuttell currently heads the Linnets' league goalscoring charts with three. Leo Cotterell and Lee Wilson are next with two.
Mills tried to address the problem on Saturday by changing his formation to a 4-3-3, Worrell Sterling joining Nuttell and Wilson up front.
The manager felt it worked: “We went 4-3-3, wanting to create more a chances and get more efforts on goal and I think we succeeded.
"I think we deserved more than a draw. With a little bit more luck we could have had all three but then they could probably say the same thing.
'”They started better and won more second balls but we got stronger and stronger. The lads did well. Their commitment and passion was awesome.
'To go a goal ahead early on obviously gave them a boost but, if anything it lifted us as well. We had a spell in the first half when we did what football's all about and we played some good stuff." Dorchester were the better team early on, Danny O’Hagan's header being cleared off the line by Tony Spearing. In the eighth minute they took the lead when Martin Shepherd swept home Gary Rice's low cross.
Lynn then got on top and Wilson saw his effort disallowed after Nuttell had been pulled up for climbing over a defender. Wilson saw a shot blocked and Glen Fuff planted a header over.
Paul Ramsey almost got the goal of the season at The Walks, his 25-yard volley flashing just wide, and Dave Puttnam was unlucky when his crisply-struck drive cannoned back off the post.
Sterling's curling effort was well saved by the keeper but Wilson finally beat him with a minute of the first half to go. Richard Follett's throw-in was glanced backwards by Magpies defender Ryan Cross and Wilson pounced to shoot low into the corner.
The visitors again started better after the break although Spearing went on a rare venture forward and brought a good save out of Kevin Maloy with a fierce right-foot shot.
At the other end Martyn Sullivan should have scored but hit the post from eight yards out and O'Hagan forced Chuck Martini into a fingertip save.
Nuttell's header had Maloy scrambling across his line and Wilson could have grabbed a winner but miscontrolled Ramsey's pass when in front of goal. .
Lynn's best move of the game almost resulted in a terrific winner. Puttnam neatly played in Follett and his blistering long-range effort was heading for the top corner until the ball struck Cross on the head and flew inches over.
Dorchester went close late on with what would have been an embarrassing goal for Lynn keeper Martini.
Neil Coates sent in a harmless looking cross that Martini misjudged and left. With most people in the ground expecting the ball to fly over or wide, it hit the bar but the visitors were fortunately unable to turn in the rebound. Lynn: Martini, Follett, Spearing, Fuff, Clark, Puttnam, Hoyle, Ramsey, Nuttell, Sterling, Wilson (McGinty 87). Subs (not used) Palmer, Gleave
