Wisbech Town 4 King's Lynn 0
29th July 1998
LINNETS suffered their heaviest defeat by their neighbours in recent memory as Wisbech retained the Kinsella Cup with a comprehensive win.
The Fenmen were certainly up for it with a hat-trick from youngster Lee Stephenson. Lynn found it difficult to string three passes together while too many hopeful long ball, turned out to be hopeless.
If visiting Linnets fans were downhearted, so was manager Tony Spearing: "I was disappointed with the way we performed. Our attitude was all wrong from the start. I want people to stand up and be counted. Maybe it's the kick up the backside we need.
"We're still building a side, I'm extremely gutted for the fans, we let them down. If they think they feel bad about the result, I feel ten times worse. Wisbech played well but their headed goals were disappointing."
Spearing unveiled Simon Ullathorne, brother of former Canary Robert, and Norwich City youngster Graham Challis.
The visitors got off to the worst possible start after three minutes when Stephenson prodded home. Glen Fuff pulled up and was replaced by assistant manager Darren Bloodworth, making a welcome second appearance in a year.
However, he was adjudged to have brought down Wisbech player-manager Gary Childs and Stephenson converted the penalty.
After the break, Bowler found plenty of space down the left and provided the unmarked Stephenson's hat trick header. Again they had problems with crosses, Keeble flicking in Child's free kick.
The visitors best chances came from Julian Delicata, who replaced Ullathorne. As soon as he came on Delicata broke clear but shot at keeper Steer.
Delicata became the 16th member of Lynn's squad after Spearing signed him for a second spell at The Walks.
"He looked a lively player when he came on," said Spearing.
