Billericay Town 0 King's Lynn 2
29th November 2003
THE Linnets continued their unbeaten away form in the cups this term, notching their fifth win on the FA Cup or Trophy road on Saturday.
Goals from Robbie Harris and Richard Woodrow were enough to beat bottom of the Ryman Premier Billericay, while Lynn keeper Steve Wilson put in an assured display.
Director of football Kevin Boon said: "Steve controlled his box well, and in the 43rd minute brought off a save at 1-0 which changed the game.
"Steve has been getting some criticism from fans, but that's because of outfield players' mistakes have put him in the wrong position in his box.
"Once we played against the wind, we settled down and played some football. "Mark Burrows was outstanding, and Carl Holmes worked very hard."
The performance did not reach the heady heights of last week's demolition of Dartford, but league form rarely enters into cup games.
The wet and windy weather did not help, and in the first 20 minutes the game had 'blown cold'.
Joint caretaker boss Darren Bloodworth said: "We knew Billericay would put up more of a threat than Dartford, but we deserved it.
"Billericay had a lot of chances, but Steve dealt with them well, and we scored at the right times.
"Paul Raynor came on and added a lot of experience.
"It's a big win, purely because of the home draw we've got in the next round."
Lynn had to hurriedly shuffle their line-up as an hour before the tie defender Adam Jones failed a fitness test on his hip knock.
So Chris Glarvey took his place in his first start for six weeks.
In a quiet opening period, David Staff and Woodrow had efforts saved.
Wilson began his involvement in the day well, saving from Leon Hunter on 25 minutes following a free-kick.
Then at the other end midfielder Jack Defty won the ball just inside the home half, went a rampaging run and forced Town stopper Jerome John into tipping his left-foot shot just around the post.
From the resulting corner Defty had a bullet header punched over.
A corner again, and Billericay had another lucky escape. John came out for the ball, but Staff hooked it back and somehow the retreating John knocked the ball away.
But Lynn soon got their reward on the half-hour mark after some fine play down the right.
Glarvey crossed for Harris to beat two defenders and bag his tenth goal of the season.
On 35 minutes the unmarked Hunter shot wide, while Town leading scorer Danny Hockton could not capitalise on a slip by Mark Burrows.
Hockton then raced clear but was denied by the advancing Wilson. It was clear that Harris was stiffening up by half-time, and he was replaced by Malcolm Ndekwe soon afterwards.
Billericay dominated the first ten minutes of the second half, but Lynn coped well.
The visitors came back into the game with three corners on the trot. But the game swung on two incidents within 60 seconds on the hour. The first had the Billericay bench ranting as Lynn skipper Glen Fuff and substitute Steve Jones fell while challenging for the ball in the Linnets box, but the referee signalled a goal-kick.
Lynn went down the other end and got the crucial second goal.
Paul Raynor, who had come on for Defty, linked with Carl Holmes for Woodrow to finish from the edge of the box and chalk up Lynn's 99th FA Trophy goal.
Following a clash of heads with Ndekwe, the hosts' Dave Reddington went off.
With 15 minutes left Hockton rolled the ball past the on-rushing Wilson, but Jamie March cleared off the line to sub Jordan Tolan, who somehow scooped wide from all of a yard out.
These things happen to you when you're bottom of the league, but you won't hear the Linnets complaining.
