King's Lynn 1 Chelmsford City 4
29th November 1997
Lynn went into this FA Trophy tie on the back of an eight match unbeaten run and undefeated in all competitions at The Walks this season, but it was clear from the kick off that their miserable record in the Trophy wasn't going to take a turn for the better.
Chelmsford controlled the match on a heavy surface hitting the post and having a shot cleared off the line by Tony Spearing in the opening twenty minutes.
They finally set about ending Lynn's long unbeaten home record in the 24th minute when they were awarded a penalty after Kevin Ellis was adjudged to have pushed visiting striker Richard Cherry in the back.
Wayne Goddard comfortably tucked away the resulting spot kick.
Lynn's best spell came in the last quarter of the half with Julian Delicata, making his first start in a Linnets shirt, twice coming close to grabbing an equaliser.
But all of their good work at the end of the half was ruined when they allowed Sean Campbell acres of space on the left to feed Chris Tovey for the visitors' second on the stroke of half time.
Manager Peter Morris threw on leading scorer Lee Hudson in place of Richard Skelly during the interval, switching Craig Hopkins to wing-back, but it did little to boost an already lethargic display from the Linnets.
A Tony Spearing free-kick inside the penalty area, awarded following a back pass from Chelmsford's Gary Bellamy to his keeper, was blocked by a visiting defensive wall in the 52nd minutes and Hudson went to close with a header from Martin Matthews' cross ten minutes later but Lynn could muster little more.
Chelmsford added their third, 14 minutes from time, from Goddard's second spot kick of the afternoon after Matthew Wright had tripped Tovey in the box.
Three minutes later Jamie Reilly made it 4-0 and although Matthews headed in a late consolation for Lynn from Hudson's cross their trophy dream had long been ended for yet another year.
