Burton Albion 1 King's Lynn 0
30th August 1999
LINNETS lost their heads and lost the match, which means they have gained just one point from their Bank Holiday travels.
After going behind in the 30th minute, some reckless late challenges meant Gary Mills was lucky to end the game with a full quota of players on the pitch, earning four yellow cards - including Wayne Halcro on his Lynn league debut - in a 15 minute spell. Lynn put up a brave second half fight.
Linnets were desperate for a win after Saturday's draw at Worcester; playing a new 4-1-2-3 formation, Lynn bossed the early stages and were unlucky not to take the lead in the seventh minute, when stand-in striker Mark Turner just fired wide after Jeremy Goss slipped in a telling pass behind the home defence.
Burton's first sniff at goal came in the 17th minute when Mark Blount's long-range effort had Chuck Martini back-pedalling in his goal and the Linnets keeper was a relieved man to see the ball drift over his bar. The hosts gradually began to stamp their authority and took the lead on the half-hour when Anton Thomas turned to fire past Martini.
Seven minutes before the break Burton missed a great opportunity to double their advantage when David Holmes blasted a penalty kick wide after Dave Robinson was harshly adjudged to have impeded him in the box. To everyone present the foul, if any, was clearly outside the area.
Linnets regained their composure during the break and home keeper Nick Goodwin was pulled into his first save of the match in the 53rd minute when the hard working Goss set up Turner, and two minutes later Goodwin came to his side's rescue again, this time from Dave Puttnam,
Linnets continued to enjoy the better of the second half but could not break down a stubborn home defence. With three minutes left Nigel Clough, in front of his father Brian, wasted a golden opportunity by firing over from five yards. Lynn: Martini, Dakin (Fuff 86), Spearing, Robinson, Clark, Halcro (Keeble 81), Goss, Taylor (McGinty 71), Turner, Puttnam.
Burton: Goodwin, Davies, March, Glasser, Blount, George, Stride, Anderson, Thomas, Clough, Holmes. Subs: Henshaw, Garner, Lyons.
