Whilst it may have only been a draw against a team that had lost their last four league games and won only once in eight, Lynn’s single point lifted then four points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand over second placed York City.
A draw was probably a fair result after an explosive opening which saw Lynn trail 2-1 after eight minutes.
Lynn manager Ian Culverhouse made four changes to the team that gained victory over Boston United on Boxing Day with Ryan Hawkins, Tom Ward, Alfie Payne and Sonny Carey all handed starts with Ross Barrows, Sam Kelly, Chris Henderson and Ryan Jarvis dropping to the bench.
Any hopes of Lynn getting their first away league clean sheet on the season were dashed on four minutes when Amari Morgan-Smith latched on to a long ball, hitting it on the half volley beyond Alex Street.
Lynn replied two minutes later with their first meaningful attack - a free kick from the right was headed on towards Adam Marriott at the far post who finished acrobatically into the top corner from eight yards.
On eight minutes the home side were back in front. A short corner from Michael Freiter found Ryan Qualter who hit the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box giving Street no chance.
Alfreton had a chance to go further ahead just after the quarter hour when a ball from Morgan-Smith beat the Lynn defence but Street saved Ben Tomlinson’s effort.
Lynn’s next chance fell to Michael Gash on 21 minutes but he headed wide as Lynn came more into the game.
Hawkins tried his luck from distance on 38 minutes and Marriott was inches away from connecting Hawkins’ cross.
The first notable chance after the restart came on 50 minutes but substitute Bobby Johnson shot straight at Street.
Marriott had a half chance for Lynn but scuffed his effort wide and on 73 minute home ’keeper Jordan Wright did well to deny Marriott with his legs.
The visitors got the equaliser their pressure deserved on 77 minutes when Marriott’s header was tipped onto the bar but Gash was there was on hand to turn the ball home.
Marriott fired wide from inside the box in the next minute while Johnson forced a save from Street soon after but neither side could claim all three points.
