Gold has always been a player who has invoked strong feelings both for and against and you can see why. For me, non-league players come in two categories, first those that do all they can and get the most out of their ability to play as high a level as they can and the second are those that have some aspects of their game that stop them progressing higher, Gold is the extreme version of this second category. He has some parts of his game that are clearly that of a much higher standard player (his defensive headers, finding space and finishing in and around the six yard box) but others where you think there must be better players at step 4 (holding the ball up, headed flick ons, general 'open field' play).JR said when he arrived that he had watched a lot of footage of the potential players so you would hope that he will have learned from TW's time here when Gold was at his most effective in a Lynn shirt. We played virtually nothing straight down the middle and asked very little of Gold outside either box but we did put balls into the box from wide positions, not always from wingers, and allowed Gold to use his ability to create separation from his defenders in those areas to finish chances. The question is, will JR be building a team to replicate those opportunities or will he think he can make Gold a better all round player (which from previous experience didn't worked for any of his predecessors)
Regarding Gold, I think with some people, unfortunately it’s a bit deeper than how he’s performing. I’ve witnessed people abusing him then he’s scored and they don’t applaud. Sad really . It’s about supporting the eleven representing KLFC . It’s only the end of May , let’s see who the new manager brings in before making any opinions on how we’ll do next season.
