General Discussion / Re: Carl Heggs

Interesting!  He really DID form an attacking team!  And he speaks English instead of mere cliches like for example "Character", "Winning fouls" or "that holding role".  He's not even after a contract, so we would have nothing to lose, at least until the end of this season.  Both he and the club would then know whether to extend....and there would be plenty of goals to cheer in the meantime....

I'm not as convinced as some that the current "Rowe" team is much better than last season's squad.  There are one or two better players, and a team trying to win games rather than pinch them, but we need a couple of skilful midfielders and another potential goalscorer, dare I say a nipster in the box!

Don't worry.  We're all guessing, but it will come out.  My own impression of him was that he is far too volatile to have stayed composed enough to keep a steady ship.  I hope that any new manager will get the job because his answers to interview questions are ideas and not cliches, his perception of the way to play rather than "physicality", "character", etc.  They all get sacked in the end!  Records in management or playing career are irrelevant - Gerrard, Rooney, Lampard,  Neville, etc are testament to that!

We lack guile and slipperiness, apart from Williams and Crane, and why not Gyasi AND Marriott together?....

Interesting thought from Mallard.  When JR was sent off in the Merthyr game he appeared in the stand near where we were seated.  I was amazed to see him in what appeared to be a bad temper and a half when the team were 4-0 up!!!  Some might approve, but I thought it was a trifle ridiculous!

The Dillathon computer suspects that's the best we can achieve if we continue without guile in midfield.  We have speed off the mark there in the excellent Williams, but no creativity elsewhere.  And JR seems to be another AL, subbing a forward for a forward, for no real change in a game.  Marriott can at least sidestep an opponent, but we need another goalscorer, and skilful midfielders.  We're not bad, but too similar to last season in my humble opinion!!!!!!!..... Get Merthyr's  ipsyer number 11 to swap the Valleys for NW Norfolk!......

I don't believe any players need to be told where to go next, younger or not.  It's such a simple game - being in space and available when a team has possession, and cramming together when they don't.  All about opinions, I suppose...

Williams is an excellent addition.  Some of the others are decent, and although we at last have an attacking team again, ferocity and aggression aren't enough to secure regular wins.  We're a team of individuals to some extent, and need a couple of skilful midfielders and a nipster, plus an additional goalscorer. I'd like to see Marriott tried again as a good addition to Gyasi in the penalty area.  Decent start, but we need more guile and slipperiness....

Attacking spirit good to see.  After seeing 2 games, I'm cautiously optimistic. Merthyr looked very ordinary in the first half, but decent in the 2nd.  Their Number 11 was the type of player we need, a nipster who caused a lot of problems.  I feel Wilson, Williams, Gyasi and Halls Johnson are good additions, but we need footballing midfielders and another goalscorer to improve our chances of keeping up this decent start...I'm trying to work out what Clunan keeps pointing at!

Darlington looked the better team to me.  We started ok, but lacked guile in midfield.  It was better than last season, but not too many options for goals.  I liked Wilson, (MoM for sure), M Williams was a tiger, but we need some slick midfielders, imho.  Gyasi will score fairly regularly, but not sure who else. Crane and Nyahwema looked useful.  Sorry, but Gold's physical presence is unlikely to move the scoreboard very often.  Need another look, but disappointed by the lack of creativity in MF, and JR's thing about "two 8s and two 10s" is a worry! Cliches don't win matches - slick players do!

It is, Mall....  That's what I mean by elusiveness!  The opposite of last season's dross that was bound to produce many of the poorest results....

I missed the game as I was returning from a holiday.  I'll be at the next home game, and it sounds promising. I'm just hoping Rowe appreciates it is a simple game in which the winning teams simply try to outnumber the opponents in as many situations on the pitch as possible, with or without the ball.  Let's not start hearing him "Redknapping" about made up tosh like "the Number 10 position", or "physicality", etc.  The game is about speed off the mark and elusiveness - we sound as if we have the armoury, so fingers crossed....

Good teams don't have formations.  They have good players in every position, flood them into attack when they have the ball, and get behind the ball when they don't.  It's the simplest game in the world, and the most exciting when played well... Fingers crossed for a good season.....

I don't know much about him, but why do some think Coulson would make a coach or a manager?

Hi TonyM - I probably know less than some on here about SC and his Chairmanship.  However, I think he has emptied his pockets and found others to do the same more than any previous Captain of the ship.  He also showed more ambition to pull the club as high up the Pyramid as possible, and even beyond.  His full ambition hasn't been realised, but we have certainly had more progress and success than in any previous era.  Rightly or wrongly, I think we're a fickle bunch of supporters, myself included, and crowds have not reached the level expected or needed to make the desired progress.  I still believe the potential is there, but our organisation is a lot weaker than many other clubs at this level.  It needn't stay that way, of course, but I hope we have another season with him at the helm....
